HJI - Small Group Program

Thank you for your interest in Stockton Helbing's small group program, the "Helbing Jazz Initiative - Small Group Program".  Our approach to Jazz education in a small ensemble setting is the same approach that people have come to enjoy during HJI clinics: spreading the joys of Jazz music.

The primary focus of every small group rehearsal will be joy. Enjoying playing music with other people, enjoying learning clear and concise strategies for success in improvising, and learning about the history of Jazz music in order to unlock each person’s musical future.

The HJI - Small Group Program is geared towards ages 13 to adult. Participants will be placed in groups of similar experience levels to ensure a comfortable learning and playing environment for all. Participants may also register with fellow musicians they already play with or with entire groups if desired.

As legendary Jazz pianist John Lewis said, “The reward for playing Jazz is playing Jazz.”

The HJI - Small Group Program will include:

  • Two 90-minute rehearsals per month directed by a professional Jazz musician hand-picked by HJI Artistic director and creator Stockton Helbing.
  • Custom arrangements created specifically for each small group.
  • Supplemental improv worksheets for each instrument created by innovative Jazz educator David Lown.
  • Rhythm Section supplemental worksheets for each song created by pianist Josh Hanlon, bassist James Driscoll, and drummer Stockton Helbing.
  • A final concert where each group gets the opportunity to publicly perform music that they have been studying and rehearsing together.
  • Free use of Williamson Music 1st rehearsal spaces.
  • Recording & Live Streaming of performances.
  • Free video reference library for supplemental study.
